This week’s coloricombo colours are picked from a simple and elegant collage and gouache painting by one of my favourite artists. It is March, and we’re gearing up for the Collage Makers Summit 2025 which opens for Early Bird enrolment today. I'm thrilled to be part of this annual event once again where I’ll be one of fourteen artist/educators who’ve each contributed brand new collage projects. These recorded lessons will be released daily from 17 to 30 March
The Early Bird price is available until the summit begins on 17 March. At only $77 ($20 off the full price of $97) for lifetime access to all the lessons on the summit, it is incredible value.
Find out all the details about the summit and secure your spot by clicking here. If you’re a contributing #coloricombo subscriber, make sure you take advantage of an additional $10 off (the code is at the end of this post).
The artwork featured is by a British artist who had a long and prolific career. Mary Fedden (1915–2012) was known for her vibrant still-life paintings and lyrical landscapes. Born in Bristol, she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1932 to 1936. After graduating, she worked as a professional painter and muralist, before serving in the Women's Land Army and later as a stage set designer for the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes during the Second World War.
Fedden’s work is characterised by bold colours, simplified forms and a strong sense of composition. I love her still-life arrangements that often feature fruit and flowers together with other everyday objects on abstracted backgrounds.
She taught at the Royal College of Art from 1958 to 1964, the first woman to lead the painting department. Among her students there were prominent artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield.
