In November 2023 I was in Berlin and saw a painting in the Staatliche Museen I found really striking and unusual. I made a note of the artist who is featured this week. It’s not often that I get to feature an artist who seems to be more widely known for discovering a famous tourist attraction than he is for his artworks.

August Kopisch (1799–1853) was a German poet, painter and writer, Born in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), Kopisch trained as a painter in Breslau and Dresden before an injury to his hand forced him to focus his talents on literature. He moved to Italy where he became fascinated with Italian culture, history and landscapes.
