November’s theme of “Cats” continues with colours from a German postcard, most probably from the late 1800s.
My #coloricombo #mewvember cohost for this month is Terry Runyan, who’s well known for her beautiful feline creations. There’s a giveaway of products and art materials this month, have a look at this post for details on how to enter the draw.
This week’s colours have been taken from an artwork by Sophie Sperlich.
Sperlich (1863–1906) was a German painter from Munich who was recognised for her charming depictions of animals, especially cats and dogs. She created works in a style reminiscent of Julius Adam and Henriette Ronner-Knip. Often delicate and sentimental, her paintings gained popularity as illustrations for postcards, which enabled her art to reach a wide audiences during her lifetime.
Many of her works portray animals in playful domestic settings, such as kittens playing with ink bottles, or lounging on sunny landscapes. Some of her notable pieces include Kittens and Spilled Ink and The Dachshund that reflected her skills when it came to capturing realistic animal expressions often depicted in detailed surroundings
Although there’s very little information about her available today, Sperlich’s painting often crop up on auction websites where they sell for relatively low sums - most are in the hundreds although The Dachshund reached €6,850 when sold in 2007.
You can see some of her other paintings here and here.
